My 1st Clue...

that O was up to no good at her art shelf was when I asked what she was doing, and she said "I don't know." Hmmmm. I was suspicious, but felt too sick to go see. I asked a couple more times, and she kept saying "I don't know." She brought me a picture and said something about "just like Olivia the Pig painted on the wall!" I was worried that she'd colored on the wall, so I got up to see. Nope. The walls were clean. Then she went to the art shelf, pointed to the underside of the shelf above the art shelf, and said "I don't want you to see, Mama." I asked what she was talking about and she repeated (while still pointing to the underside of the shelf), "I don't want you to see, Mama." I walked over and looked at the underside of the shelf and saw that she had scribbled on it with her markers. I gave her a cloth and she cleaned it up. She apologized, and said she was "naughty on purpose", but she didn't want me to see. I put her in time out, and she was upset because she wanted a snack. She really needs to work on her deceptive skills (but don't tell her that!) :) I would have never seen the scribbling if she hadn't pointed to it! Silly girl :)

  1. Nyah had her first foray into graffiti art at about O's age (when I was also pregnant and sick all the time) - coincidentally enough she also scribbled on her bookcase and ratted herself out. Luckily it was her first and last episode of public defacement. I'm thinking O will probably be the same way.

Got to love those Olivia books, LOL!

  2. Good to see that Arin is not the only one that likes to answer with "I don't know".
Arin has colored on stuff a few times, but not in a long time, so hopefully O will not make a habit with her new artwork!

  3. Haha, that is how we stay sane. So naughty but we just have to step away when they aren't looking and laugh. Children are the greatest even in their worst moments.

  4. At a much older age I remember laying on the floor under the coffee table in the living room and drawing pictures on it with crayons. Later, when my mother discovered the 'artwork' she was quite easily able to deduce whose work it was as I'd signed my name to it ... Not quite the immediate ratting-oneself-out, but definitely a give-away.

I'm glad it was easily cleaned up!

  5. Very cute! I have heard of another homeschooling mom that took an opportunity like that and taught her child about the Sistine Chapel. At least you could lie down too. They used the underside of their kitchen table and taped paper to the underside of it and started to paint.

  6. Lol one time I was watching my friend's sons when one of them colored on the wall. It was right below where the table met the wall, so I couldn't see it from my eye level. But he gave it away by pointing it out lol.

Kids are so cute at that age!

  7. aww that is funny not for you but you will laugh at some point :)

she was probably doing it for attention since you've been so sick :(

  8. I love this age, too! It was so hard to put her in time-out since she was SO cute :) However, I felt like I had to since she said she was "naughty on purpose." I'd been expecting her to do something like this since we've been reading Olivia the Pig, and O actually said that she wanted to paint on the wall like Olivia the Pig :(

  10. Hi Melissa --

I haven't posted before, but I really enjoy your blog, and am constantly inspired by all that you do with O. Just thought I'd put it out there, since you say yourself "it was hard to put her in time-out" -- have you considered alternative, non-punitive approaches to discipline? It is possible! Not trying to be snarky or anything -- it just seemed like an idea you might be open to.
    thanks for your blog!
