Little Ballerina Shadowbox

O just completed her 1st year of tap and ballet lessons, and she LOVED it! She spends most of her time dancing and putting on shows, so her recital was especially exciting for her (and us!). She glowed on stage, and we were so excited to see her so happy.

I made this ballerina shadow box as a memento of her first year of ballet lessons. I used double sided tape to attach her 1st pair of ballet shoes and her ballet picture to the matte. This shadowbox took about 5 seconds to put together, and I love how it turned out. O gets VERY sad when she sees it because she's so sad that she doesn't fit in her ballet shoes anymore (she has several hand-me down pairs that do fit), so she says that she can't even look at it. What a sweet and silly girl!

I'm looking forward to making several more shadowboxes of special mementos...the only problem is that I have no where to hang them. I wonder if we should buy a bigger house just so I can have wall space for O and E's artwork and shadow boxes...

  1. What an easy, quick and very effective way to create gorgeous keepsakes.

I love that she is so sentimental about them. It's gorgeous.

  2. this is the number one delimma of parents. I have four kids and dont decorate with their art :( there just isnt any room!

beautiful box though!. I had a big storage box for decorating things that I change around the house to suit my mood or season. Maybe you can have a LARGE storage box somewhere and change up the decorations/kid art around your house occasioanlly ?

  3. Hello! Found your blog while browsing... I loved the idea of putting mementoes in a box! We've been doing something similar, by putting little treasures like shells into shadowboxes. :)

  4. I LOVE this! I am pretty gosh darn sure I will be borrowing this idea when we get to our new house. So happy I didn't stick Mad's ballet slippers into the yard sale pile for today! Thanks!

  5. Yes, the dilemma of too many shadow boxes or other kids' art displays. I gave my daughter shadow boxes to display some of my grandson's baby clothes, although full term he was tiny and wore preemie clothes at first. It is a great way to preserve special memories.

  6. Hi Melissa! My name is Melissa also and I have an "O" and "E" as well! My "O" is 4 years old and just finished her first year of ballet and tap too! I LOVE what you have done with your daughter's ballet slippers and will be headed to the store on Monday to purchase a shadow box. :o) Thanks for such a great idea!

  8. thank you so much for the inspiration! My daughter is 5 1/2 and has been taking ballet since she was 2 and I have saved all her ballet shoes and attire but never sure what I was going to do with it. I think I will make a similar shadowbox and display it in her room!

  9. Thanks so much for this idea! I gave away my daughter's first ballet shoes to a girl in class that didn't have her own, but I will have to do this with the pair that she is about to outgrow.
