Our New School Room...In Progress

Our long awaited school room is FINALLY in progress!  I can't wait to get everything set-up and organized!     I'm sure it will be a couple of months before things are finished and set-up the way I want them to be, but just the idea of having space to organize is making me feel giddy :)

Here's a peek...

Pretty exciting, right?

One Perk of Homeschool...

is you can wear whatever you want!

E(3) is wearing a Cleopatra costume (from Walmart) and is pretending to be the Pharaoh Hatshepsut.  She has been either Hatshepsut, Pocahontas, Kaya, or Felicity for the past several months.  It is so much fun to  see her so caught up in her pretend play, and I have had fun playing the roles of "Tanak" or "Powhatan."

E and O(6) took turns wearing the Egyptian costume all day (since I was too cheap to buy 2 of them!).  They had fun working together to complete a community worker ABC puzzle.

One cold morning, the girls decided that it was time to get out their "ice skating" dresses.  They wore them all morning during school.

0(6) was working on her Writing with Ease lesson.  I have been surprised by how much she LOVES these lessons. She wasn't very happy in this picture, because I'd prompted her to answer the questions in complete sentences and this made her feel frustrated.  She got over it and answered in complete sentences the next day with no prompting and WITH JOY!

I frequently point out these fun benefits of homeschooling to O so that she will hopefully recognize that this is MUCH more fun than attending public school (she really wants to ride the bus to and from school...although, she hasn't mentioned riding the bus in a month or so, so maybe she is realizing that she has it made!).

Excavating Ancient Egyptian Treasures

The girls and I have had a fantastic time excavating ancient Egyptian treasures this week!  The idea for this activity has been bouncing around in my head for a while, so I was excited when we finally reached the Egyptian chapters in our history curriculum!

To set up this activity, you need the Ancient Egyptians toob (link at the end of the post), sand, a wooden box  (I used the box that our Melissa and Doug unit blocks came in), a magnifying glass, and a paintbrush.

I put the list that came with the toob in the box, so that we would know what we were looking for. You'll want to do this activity outside or have a broom nearby because it's almost impossible to keep the sand from getting on the floor!

We searched through the box with our paintbrushes.  I used the end of brush and stuck it in the box a few times to try to find objects, and O was quick to caution me against this because I might damage the treasures!

There was lots of excitement in our house when O(6) uncovered the pyramids of Giza!

We matched the figures to the list and read about each figure as we found it.

After we finished the activity, the girls had lots of practice sweeping!

O had to get out the electric sweeper to get all of the sand.  Once the weather cools off, we'll start doing this activity on our deck!

Random Homeschool Moments

O(6) woke up before E one morning and had a great time playing with the Handwriting without Tears letter forms while I made breakfast. This is her monkey.

She was practicing her handwriting while discreetly wiggling her two front teeth.

We had fun playing with the sight words power tower.

O reviewed simple addition with her math wrap-ups.

We've played and built structures on the light table.  We reviewed colors and shapes with E as we played.

E loves these blocks.

O(6) reads leveled readers from Reading A to Z on the ipad.  We like how we can enlarge the words that she is reading.

We all really enjoyed studying the Vikings.

We made slime!

We learned that it will stretch if you pull it apart slowly or let it hang, but it rips if you pull it apart quickly.  They thought it was absolutely hilarious when I pretended to sneeze the slime out of my nose :)

We had fun making spin art!

We learned that pumice floats.

O likes working with the Rightstart abacus.

O loves to carry baskets on her head while pretending that she is an African lady.
