Loving the Outdoors

Sorry for the lack of posts!  My blogger app (on my iphone) was working for a while, but it doesn't work anymore.  We've had beautiful weather lately, and we have been spending as much time outside as possible.  O(7) has recently mastered riding her bike without training wheels, and she LOVES it!

They love to climb on hay bales and jump from bale to bale.

We haven't had much time to kayak lately, but it's one of my favorite things to do, so I hope to get back to it soon.

O does cartwheels wherever she goes!

Fun times at Lakeside Homeschool where we spend most of our day outdoors and love to go on field trips!

Homeschool PE

O(7) ran a quarter of a mile, and then cartwheeled back home.  So, just in case you ever wondered how many cartwheels and round offs a 7 year old can do in a quarter of a mile, it's 112!

Our Almost Daily Nature Walk

I love to take walks with the girls, and my goal is for us to walk at least 4 times a week.  We usually alternate between running and walking, so that we get exercise and nature study time.  Right now, we walk around 3 miles per week, but I'm hoping to eventually work up to 8 to 10 miles per week.
We really enjoyed studying this pine tree this week.  It is covered in ants, sap, and spiders.  E(4) was excited to break off pieces of sap to take home, and both girls took home pieces of bark to crush with their mortar and pestle (to use in their science lab).
O(7) insisted on us joining hands and playing ring around the Rosie around the tree...fun!

They were also really excited to take their babies on our walk.  They are such good baby wearing mamas!

Screened Porch Science Lab

Our girls LOVE to create and conduct science experiments!  O(7) has been conducting experiments for years, and E(4) has recently realized the joy in this activity, too!
In the past, the girls done their experiments in the kitchen, but this week I realized that clean-up would be much easier if they worked on the porch (I'm not sure why it took me years to realize this!).
The girls were thrilled to measure, pour, mix, hypothesize, and discuss their experiments and findings for hours.  I love that they have the freedom to explore and create in such a fun and engaging way each day...hooray for homeschooling!

A Ballerina at Work

While E(3) is in dance class, O(6) has fun doing her schoolwork at the desk in the dance studio dressing room. We save math workbook pages to do at dance, and O loves this!

Last Week in Review

Here are a few highlights from last week...

The girls found the flower button board that I made for O(6) about 4 years ago.  O loved it, but E was only moderately interested.

We had a Valentine's Day themed homemade playdough playdate.  The kids helped make the playdough and then had fun playing with it.

We cut hearts from flour tortillas to make heart shaped cinnamon and sugar tortillas for a playdate snack.

Goobi magnets are the most chosen work in our school room!  E(3) had fun making different shapes.

The chocolate playdough was a little crumbly!  It made a mess, but clean-up was fairly easy.

O(6) enjoyed her Rightstart Math lessons this week.  She created and solved math problems using the balance, and then recorded the problems in her notebook.

E(3) enjoyed spreading out and looking at the cards from our Impressionism memory game.

We took a long walk on a beautiful day!
E is running to me with her arms open for me to pick her up.  Love!

Bird Song Identification Game

The girls and I have had so much fun playing our bird song identification game! We take turns wearing an eye mask while someone else chooses a bird from the basket and squeezes it to hear it's song. If you guess the bird correctly, you get to keep the bird. They beat me every time!

Monday at Lakeside Homeschool

You can expect to see fairly frequent posts without too much wordiness since I recently learned to blog from my phone!  It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier and faster than before, so blogging is actually fun again!  However, I'm not very good at typing on my phone, and autocorrect just kills me (if I say something that makes absolutely no sense then you can assume that I have been autocorrected).

Now that I am (temporarily) on my desktop computer, I'll add captions for these photos.

The girls LOVE our world map, and we sing the continent song each morning while locating the continents on the map.  Lately, we have been focusing on Great Britain (since we've recently finished reading The Secret Garden), France (since we studied Picasso in January), Canada (since we are reading the Caroline American Girl books), and Russia (since we are studying Tchaiovsky this month).
Our smartglobe is also used frequently by the girls.  They love to listen to the national anthems of the different countries.

O has recently become interested in the knobless cylinders (they came from Montessori Outlet, I think).

Both girls love these blocks.  They came from Lakeshore (I think).

Inchimals are always fun!  E was putting them in order and having lots of fun doing it!

Toob animals are always a hit with E!  These animals are from our South America bin.

Pure Joy

One of the joys of homeschooling is having the freedom to spend the entire day outside on a beautiful day. This day made the challenging days so very worth it!

A Quick Peek Into Our New Schoolroom

We have had fun having school in our new school room!  It is still chaotic and disorganized, but it's usable.  Here are some pics from the last few weeks of school in the school room.

E(3) LOVES these animal word puzzles.

We all love the bells!

The sandpaper letters are popular with E(3).  Both girls were excited that their American Girl dolls joined us for school!  They have fun making Kit and Kaya ask questions about the lessons.

E(3) is making a house on the geoboard.

O(6) loves math!

Elliott is building shelves for our schoolroom at this very moment, so hopefully it will be organized soon!

Our Current School Area

We started semi-officially homeschooling in June and spent most of school time on our deck.  However, after a couple of months of "deck school," I realized that I was going to have to organize an inside space for us...since I knew that our real school room was imminent, I'd let the den/school room/playroom/art area/nature area/science center become much too cluttered and unorganized.  After a weekend of organizing and clearing out (I got rid of more than 70 books...you couldn't even tell that any were missing after I was done!), we had a fairly organized school space in our den.   Here are a few pics...

This is the Montessori shelf that Elliott and I built for O(6) years ago.  I love this shelf and would like to have about 6 more just like it :)

Both girls love our smartglobe!.  E(3) really loves the continent puzzle lately, and O(6) chooses the wedgits to start her day most days.

We have enjoyed this space for the last couple of months, and our homeschooling time has gone much smoother since we've had this area set-up.  However, we need much more space to really be organized, and I can't wait to have our den just be a den and playroom again instead of a den, playroom, school room, nature room, art room, etc.
