Making Pizza

Since one of O(6)'s leveled readers is titled Making Pizza (Reading A to Z), we decided to make pizza!

It was deeeelicious!

Since it was pizza night, I decided that it should be movie night as well!  We watched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe since we finished reading the book about a week ago.  The girls loved the movie, but I was cringing at some of the scary and violent parts.  I tried to cover their eyes during some of the battle scenes, but they were not interested in that at all.  E(2) said "I like the sary (scary) parts!"  O(6) was really scared until she saw Aslan, and then she said she wasn't scared anymore.

We are looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the Narnia series...I was not surprised by how much O loved this book, but I was surprised by how much 2 year old E enjoyed it!

Fun on a Rainy Day!

It rained ALL day one day last week, and we all wanted to be outside so badly.  I let the girls run around in the rain (it wasn't thundering or lightening) a little bit, but that didn't last long.  So, we headed to the (empty) garage to ride scooters and the plasma car.  We ALL love the plasma car!

O's Birthday Ring

For some reason, I ALWAYS (at least for the past couple of years) forget the birthday ring!  This year we set up O's birthday ring a week late.  This was fine and kind of nice since it was a little extra celebration after all the birthday hype died down.

Since we didn't have a #6 candle, O decided to use a #4 and 2 extra candles to make 6 :)  Elliott brought home donuts for the girls (a very rare treat), and he put them in the center of the birthday ring while we sang to O.

Fun times!

Homemade Lava Lamps

I've had making homemade lava lamps with the girls on my to-do list for almost a year, and we finally did it this week!  We had SO much fun, and this is definitely an activity that we'll do again soon.

The idea came from this blog via Pinterest.  To make a homemade lava lamp, you need cooking oil, water, food coloring, alka seltzer, and a bottle (we used glass Snapple bottles).

First, we filled 2 bottles (1 for each girl) 3/4 full with cooking oil.

Then, we added the water until the bottle was close to full.

The girls chose their colors and added in 10 drops of food coloring.

We watched the food coloring rain down through the oil and into the water.

Then came the really fun part!  I gave each girl an alka seltzer tablet, which they broke into 4 pieces.  They put one piece in the bottle at a time.  It was SO much fun to watch the bubbles go crazy in the bottle!

The girls shook their bottles up, and they were pretty excited by the thousands of tiny bubbles.

They wanted to keep adding alka seltzer, and they ended up putting 3 tablets into each bottle.

They added in different colors into their bottles to see what would happen. O(6) said "This is awesome!"

E(2) LOVES her lava lamp and wanted to carry it with her everywhere.  They are looking forward to adding more alka seltzer to their bottles when we get home from vacation :)

The Pyramids of Giza...A Fun Rice Crispy Treat!

Since we are studying Ancient Egypt in our homeschool (and we will continue to do so for a while because we are having so much fun!), I thought it would be fun to make the Pyramids of Giza out of Rice Crispy treats.

To make the pyramid treats, I combined rice crispies, melted marshmallows, and  melted butter (I didn't measure anything) and pressed it into a pyramid sand mold.  I hid m & m treasures throughout the pyramids.

This was a simple and fun activity, but the girls were SO involved in playing with their Kaya (American Girl) paper dolls that they were (shockingly) not interested in helping me make the pyramids until I was almost finished.

O(6) arranged the pyramids on the tray, and they helped spread the brown sugar sand around the pyramids.  They were VERY excited to eat these delicious pyramids!

We used the pyramid mold that is made by Hape.  It is a little smaller than I was hoping, but it worked perfectly.  We've also had fun making sand pyramids on our beach, and  I have a few other fun activities planned for this pyramid.

Shaving Cream Fun

One of the girls favorite activities is to play with shaving cream!  They love to smear it all over their bodies, and they have fun mixing colors in it.  Fun and messy times!

"On the Banks of the Nile"

O(6) received several ancient Egyptian playmobil sets from her grandparents for her birthday, and we have had SO much fun playing with them!  (I am somewhat addicted to playmobil now)  We took some of the figures down to our beach and had fun playing "On the banks of the Nile."

I can't wait until E(2)'s bday in September...she's getting the Pharoah's temple and Egyptian family!  I love that the girls can read about the ancient Egyptian times, and then act them out so easily and with so much fun.  We were all VERY excited to discover that the Egyptian tomb (which is really more like a house) has a shaduf in the yard!

Here are the sets that we have (or will have). Many of the Egyptian items are on sale at the Playmobil website.

I've only been able to find the Egyptian family on Amazon...I think it's discontinued.

Making Plant and Animal Cell Models

The girls and I had fun making plant and animal cell models to go along with O's R.E.A.L Science (Life) curriculum.

First, we mixed up the gelatin.

After it set, O(6) added in a grape tomato nucleus for each cell and grape chloroplasts for the plant cell.

Simple, fun, and educational!

Toilet Paper Dough

The girls and I had lots of fun making dough from toilet paper and water a couple of weeks ago.  We unrolled a roll of toilet paper into a container (this felt very wasteful to me, so we probably won't do this again very soon), and added in the water... a little bit at at time.

Then we just played...I made a cave for our Ice Age people, and O made a bowl.  E helped me with the cave and then she started knocking it down...I think she was pretending to be a wooly mammoth.

We had a lot of fun, but we'll probably never get all of the dried bits of toilet paper off of our deck...luckily, I'm ok with that :)
