Hammering is Fun!

This hammering activity has been on my list for a LONG time, and I'm so glad to finally get it together. O was very engaged in this work. She liked hammering, but she also enjoyed just pushing the golf tees (she didn't like me calling them golf tees. She corrected me and said "O calls them nails!") in with her fingers.

I love to see pictures of trays on other blogs, so I'm going to try to do more of that :) Here's an action shot (because I love action shots, too!).

  1. Too funny, that's been on my to do list for a long time too, but we haven't gotten around to it yet. So glad to know that it is a fun activity.

  2. We have that activity on our shelf too -- one more idea (if you hadn't thought of it already) is once she gets the hang of it, add some marbles and have her balance the marbles on top of the tees once they are all in place. Very challenging, but very fun. My 2yo DS LOVES that! (Although try it yourself first to make sure it actually works - the first time I tried it, I was using different tees and the marbles kept falling off!)

  3. I really like the idea of using the foam. We used playdough. Nice pictures.

  4. I'm uneducated in the ways of Montessori and am curious about the purpose of the trays. Would you mind explaining?

I laughed out loud at the thought of O saying, "O calls them nails!" I love that she refers to herself in the third person :)

  5. Good call with the plant foam. We did a a similar activity last week using the styrofoam packaging that my husband's computer came packed in. Such a mess! Little white balls everywhere, even a week later.

  7. Elsa Low- Yes, the forms can be reused as far as I know. I'm planning on using our as long as I can!

The trays help organize the activities and keep things neat. Everything needed for an activity is on the tray. The child retrieves the tray from the shelf, takes it to his or her workspace, completes the activity, returns the work to the tray, and returns the tray to the shelf. It's much more pleasant than have a bunch of stuff jumbled on a shelf :)

  8. Sydney loves this activity. I use regular styrofoam, so it is extremely messy. Floral foam looks like a much better choice. And a cute little tray!

  9. A material company used non-hardening clay, I think the floral foam break apart quite easily, maybe I will try to see if a big-think car wash sponge would work.
