Busy Baby

E is a crawler, and she'll crawl through and on anything...

through water

on grass

on sand

on an inflatable waterslide

Research shows a correlation between crawling and later reading ability...if that is true, then baby E ought to be a fantastic reader one day!

however a lot of kids don't crawl on hands and knees these days. My son just started walking and he was only a scooter! our pedi said crawling is no longer on the denver developmental checklist! =)

Thank you so much for this blog!

  4. Lots of kids don't crawl these days and LOTS of kids have OT, PT, and attention issues as a result of popular parenting practices of today. Crawling is extrememly important and shouldn't be dismissed. Here's a link that I've just found quickly to provide a little more info http://www.developmentaldelay.net/page.cfm/162

  5. Hi Melissa,

We're currently considering purchasing a beautiful lakefront property, but I'm terrified of having small children near water on a daily basis. It looks like you live on a lake as well, so I was hoping you could share some tips for teaching about water safety, rules you've come up with, etc. Thank you so much!

  6. Allison,
It is scary to have small kids near the water on a daily basis...we have many safety measures in place that help me stay sane. One of my biggest fears is that one of the kids will sneak outside without me realizing it. O is just getting to the age where she would be capable of that. We have an alarm system that chimes anytime a door is opened. Our house is small and the chime can be heard throughout the house. We have baby proof knobs on the exterior doors. The house is surrounded by a fence with self closing gates, and the gates have magnetic locks like the ones you see at pools. O can't reach the locks, but she will be able to within the next 2 years. She knows that she is never to go on the dock without a grown up and that she is never to go near the water without a grown up. When I am out there with both girls by myself (almost every morning), O wears a life jacket while we swim...she understand that I am outnumbered and this is a necessity. I am terrified of being distracted by the baby who puts everything in her mouth and O accidentally going out to far and getting over her head, so her life jacket is on her if she is in the water at all. This morning we all played on the beach and I did not make her wear it, but as soon as she wanted to swim, she immediately put it on. She took swimming lessons this summer and has come a long way, but she still is not swimming independently.
We are thinking of moving soon, and I would love to not live on the water with small kids... However, we love living here (most days), and it's a wonderful thing to be able to wake up and go play on our own beach :) Hope that helps!
