For one week this summer, we did a "Laura" activity each day. Since then we've done a couple of "Laura" activities per week. One of the girls' favorite activities was washing clothes on a washboard. They dressed in their prairie clothing and out we went to the front yard to wash clothes!
The struggled with washing one of Elliott's t-shirts, but O loved washing his socks! They were easier for her to handle, and we were all amazed by how white she got them!
Thanks to Guhguh (my mom) for finding the washboard and tub for us to use!!!

What a fun activity!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I am going to hunt high & low for a wash board and plan to wash the dolly & teddy clothes.
ReplyDeleteCan I ask what pattern you used for the prairie clothing? (especially the bonnet)

ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant!
ReplyDeleteThat's adorable!
ReplyDeleteThat is extremely adorable.
ReplyDeleteMum of Many- I bought the clothing from a shop on Etsy. The girls love the clothing, but I wasn't pleased with the quality...frayed lace and holes at the seams after one day of wear, so I won't say where I bought them :(
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun! What other "Laura" activities did you do?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great activity! What other "Laura" things did you do?
ReplyDeleteWhile it's not quite the way they did it, you can easily make your own butter using a small jar and a marble. Fill jar halfway with heavy cream or heavy whipping cream. Secure lid (if it's not a screw-top, tape it down.) Shake and/or roll vigorously for around 15 minutes. When the marble stops clonking around in there, it's done. Strain off leftover buttermilk (and make biscuits!) using cheesecloth and/or rinse with water. Ta-Dah! Tastes AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteLudicrous Mama- We made butter! I shook my jar so hard that the marble broke the jar. I'll post about all of our other "Laura" Camp activities this week...I'm writing them now, while my mom rocks my tired girls :)
ReplyDeleteNow that looks like fun! I need to do a simialr theme camp for my 5 yr old son. any ideas, anyone???
ReplyDeleteI was so excited telling my husband about Laura camp, he asked if I could attend! I played Laura a lot as a child and enjoy reading the books to my oldest son now. I saved my bonnets and calico dress (all made by grand and great grandmothers). Hope my girl will be playing in them in a few years.
ReplyDeleteYour "Laura" camp is absolutely wonderful! As someone who grew up near DeSmet, South Dakota, I'm a real fan of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. And all your activities really help bring the books to life! I featured your photo and "Laura" camp posts at http://livingmontessorinow.com/2011/07/21/little-house-on-the-prairie-unit-study/
ReplyDeleteI love this! I have a wash board too so we will have to try this! thanks for the idea!

I have been planning our Little Summer on the Prairie since January. I love taht I am no alone in this love. :P My daughter watched all the tv series and finished her collection of DVD's for her birthday. Now I want her to read the books and came up with some great ideas to encouarge her along. We will be starting the first week of July. Thanks for some more inspiration. I was a bit too scared of dipping candles like Farmer Boy talks about and after seeing how it didn't work out for you I think I might pass on that activity. :P
