Showing Growth

In order to show O's growth, I decided to take a picture of her each year in my wedding dress.

O in 2007

O in 2008. I think she thought I was a little crazy, but she was excited about wearing my wedding dress. She kept saying "too big, too big!"

The idea for this came from Family Fun magazine. A reader had her daughter wear an old fashioned bathing suit every year for a picture until it finally fit her at around age 15. I tried to think of something meaningful that O could wear, and I realized that my wedding dress would be perfect :) I'll eventually put all of the pictures in a book together to show her growth from year to year.

  1. I think i have seen this somewhere else too.. or actually I think it was the wife wearing it each anniversary ;) hoping to keep doing so until she gets too fat ;) LOL

what a cute tradition.. I wish I thought of that.. in feb on my 9th wedding anniversary I dressed up in my dress and the girls put on the veil.. and we had photos.

I saw a birthday tradition of girls standing back to back with their dad for a yearly photo to see how they have grown..I like that idea too

  2. I love this idea!! Thanks so much! I was so darn skinny when we got married, there is no way I could ever fit in that thing again! But it will be darling for my daughters!

Thanks for all the fantastic ideas!!

  3. I had seen this idea too, but it was a boy wearing a suit and tie. They kept taking pictures after he grew out of it too (I suppose around 16 or so) and it was funny when the sleeves and pant legs were 3 inches shorter than they were supposed to be. I don't think you could do that with O. It just wouldn't look right with a wedding dress :)

    BTW - Beautiful dress!

  6. That has to be the most adorable thing I've ever seen! I wish I'd started this when my oldest daughter was born.

I don't think my husband still has the suit from our wedding, but I know he still has the tie (I searched EVERYWHERE to find a white silk tie). Maybe I'll put my son in just the tie...

  7. I started doing something similar with my son. When he was about 1 month old I toke a picture of his hand on top of my hand and then my husband's hand on the very bottom. I think it will be very cool to see the changes through the years. I plan to do this every year around his birthday.

  8. Good for you, I remember that issue. By the time I read it though, mine were already older so I couldn't do it.

  10. Right now she's so little that it's cute, but what about when she gets to be a teenager and has body issues and maybe your dress doesn't fit her any more? I'm concerned that this has the potential to make your daughter feel bad about how she looks. It seems like this "tradition" is really more for you than for her.

  11. Hillary- You don't need to worry. We are raising our daughters to be confident and self-assured, and it is highly unlikely that growing out of my wedding dress will be even slightly damaging or traumatic for them. I remember trying on my mom's wedding dress when I was in the 8th or 9th grade...it was so tight that I had to hold my breath, and I still couldn't zip it. However, it didn't bother me at all :)

  12. to add to the self image thing, I out grew my mom's 80s clothes when I was in the 5th grade. I remember her telling me, I wore that AFTER I gave birth to you. I was 10 and all I thought was wow, I'm growing up! I outgrew the shirt a couple years later around 14 and never thought a thing about it. I think I just figured, hey different body types. I didn't feel fat by any means.

I think that it a very clever way to use a wedding dress. We did the same in my family but with a stuffed animal that belonged to my grandpa. All the girls got their pictures with it to compare as we aged.

I need to think up something soon as my oldest is already 2!
