Toothpicks and Styrofoam

Thanks to Montessori Mama for this fun activity! I handed O a sheet of styrofoam and a container of toothpicks and showed her how to stick a toothpick in the styrofoam. She thought it was great, but we quickly ran out of toothpicks. Luckily, our guests arrived at the same time that she ran out :) I'll have to find more toothpicks before I let her try this again!

  1. This reminded me of an activity my crew did last year -- we used toothpicks (just one per kid) to poke holes in heavy contruction paper, then we taped the paper to the back windows so we could see the light shining through. We pretended they were constellations.

    Love your blog!

  2. Yes! A friend was just telling me about a hole punching activity her 3yo did in a M classroom. Draw a shape on a small piece of construction paper, place on cardboard or styrofoam and give them a toothpick or pushpin. They punch small holes around the outline (or freeform). It was her daughters favorite classroom activity.
