I asked my niece to draw a special picture for my sister that I would use to make a necklace. She was thrilled and got right to work!

This is a picture of O's marble painting.

This is one of O's first drawings of lots of O's! I love this one, and it's going to be hard to give it away :) I think I'll make one like it for myself!

This is O's handprint painting that she made for my mom's birthday. I printed it a little too big, so she's missing a little of her pinkies. Oops :(

Another handprint painting that O made as a thank you gift.

This is a picture of O's silhouette. This is another of my favorites, and I may keep this one for myself :)

These pendants were VERY easy to make. I printed the pictures as thumbnails (or a contact sheet), cut them out, and glued them to the scrabble tiles using mod podge. After a day or so, I painted them without a layer of mod podge. After another day or so, I glued the bail on using super strong glue. The bails were hard to find, but I finally found them at Hobby Lobby. They weren't exactly what I wanted, but I didn't have any choices :) Also, I would have liked to coat the pictures with diamond glaze, but I couldn't find it anywhere! Enjoy! If anyone else makes these using your child's artwork, I'd love to see a picture :)
I love the idea of using the kids' artwork! I have some 1/2 way done that I did with round wood pieces and scrapbook paper since I didn't have scrabble pieces on hand. I found something called Paper Glaze(at Michael's) that works just like Diamond Glaze since no one around here had ever even heard of that. What kind of glue did you use for the bail, that's where I'm having trouble, super glue is not working for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Maria. I'll look for the paper glaze next time I'm at Michael's. I used loctite super glue. It's in a small container and you brush it on with a small brush. It's very strong and smelly :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea. I was just at Hobby Lobby yesterday getting supplies to make these for my cousins for Christmas. I couldn't find the Diamond Glaze either. I love the idea of using the children's artwork. I am going to try these later today.
ReplyDeleteThat is the coolest thing ever! I am so impressed.
ReplyDeleteWOW! They are so amazingly beautiful. I am now so desperate to make these!! I have been wanting one of these done for ages (see link) but I was going to wait and ask the birthday fairy ;0) However you can't possibly be expected to ask the birthday fairy for things you make yourself, now can you?!

I have made the scrabble necklaces. I love your ideas. You can buy diamond glaze on JoAnne's website. It is about $12 for a big bottle. It looks really cool. I had to buy my bails online and I used a gel super glue to secure the bail.
ReplyDeleteI love it!f
ReplyDeleteI use a product called Glossy Accents. It's in the scrapbook/stamp section at JoAnns. Works the same as Diamond Glaze. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to use children's artwork! I have diamond glaze and have used it on pendants I made by drilling small hole into little wooden disks. I decoupaged on scrapbook paper, used a rub-on for the receipent's first initial, then coated with diamond glaze. The glaze can be hard to work with, it bubbles a lot. I got mine at a local scrapbook store so calling around might help you find it. You can also find small picture pendants at Joann's that I've put index prints in and covered with clear nail polish.
ReplyDeleteare cute, I gave up on this whole idea because I couldn't find scrabble tiles - except for buying a proper game or diamond glaze. BUT if you google diamond glaze you can get a wee pack free from the company who make it - sorry I didn't keep the link.
ReplyDeleteI really like this. Can you buy scrabble tiles anywhere or do you have to take them out of a game?
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this idea!
ReplyDeleteProfessional Mommy- I used the tiles from an old game, but you could probably find something similar at Hobby Lobby or Michael's.
ReplyDeleteGREAT idea! I am bookmarking it because these would be great birthday/mother's day gifts. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteYou can buy a bag of Scrabble tiles on Hasbro's website for $5-6 if you go to the customer service section for missing game pieces. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea! Those are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI had the same idea, and thought I was the only brilliant one. Great minds think alike, right?

Love the silhouette! I'll have to try that one!
Hi All, I'm a retired elementary teacher and a glass artist. This idea is so cute. I have two tips that might help someone. You can buy bails at Delphiglass.com in a pack of 25 for about $13.00...silver or gold plated. Several sizes but small would work best for these. Attch with a glue called E-6000(Walmart, $3.00). I've never had a bail come off using E-6000! Rough up the spot where your bail goes with a piece of sandpaper, glue and cover witha small piece of blue painters tape. DO NOT TOUCH for 24 hours. I've glued hundreds of bails to fused glass this way without ever having a problem. Hope this helps someone!
ReplyDeleteHow cute these are...I especially love the silouette! I have been looking for Diamond Glaze to make necklaces out of large washers and have not been able to find at local craft stores, so thank you for the other suggestions!
ReplyDeleteJust happened on your website, looking for diamond glaze. Check out unitedcraftersinc.com for some really cute glass tiles you could make the necklaces with, and the diamond glaze, too.
ReplyDeleteI've been www.unitedcraftersinc.com for my glass pendant supplies and have never been disappointed. The quality og the glass is amazing and the prices are 1/2 of what you pay anywhere else. They also have quality Aanraku bails much cheaper too. Hope this helps someone. :o)
ReplyDeleteDo you print out the contact prints from your computer? And do you need them to be in photo paper? What kind of paper works best? What a great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteThose area absolutely wonderful! I would love to make some but have NEVER worked with Mod Podge or any jewelry making materials. Is it pretty easy to figure out?
ReplyDeleteHow do you set them up to print that size? I don't know how to do thumnail size (I use Word)Is it just regular paper or cardstock? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI have a thrifted scrabble game calling my name! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThese are freaking adorable. I must make MANY!! Thanks for the idea. I don't want to lose the link, and wanted to share with others too for Mothers Day this year, so it's featured it in a roundup of my favorite DIY Mothers Day gifts, here:

Sorry I haven't answered these questions sooner! I print the contact prints from my computer using microsoft printer and scanner wizard that came with our computer. I print them on photo paper, and it's a little tricky to get them the exact right size.
ReplyDeleteMod podge is very easy to use, so give it a try!
is it possible to update the links for the photos? I can't view them, the links are dead.
