A Pseudo Pillowcase Dress

I've been wanting to make a pillowcase dress for O since last summer, and it was so easy that I wish we'd done it sooner. I'm calling it a pseudo pillowcase dress since we didn't actually use a pillowcase to make the dress :) To get the measurements for the dress, we held the fabric up to O and decided that we wanted it to be 18 inches long with a 2 inch hem. We wrapped the fabric around her to get the width :) We then followed the directions on Maya Made for cutting out the arm holes and hemming the arm holes and neckline. For the ribbon, we decided to deviate from the directions a bit. We used 2 ribbons and tied them at her shoulders. I keep saying "we," but my mom really did all the work. I was just the supervisor :) I think that new pillowcase dresses and lazy days skirts will be on my Spring to-do list each year for my girlies!

  1. I love it, I think I will be making a trip to the fabric store tomorrow.
Well, actually I was going to go look for the Steam a seam anyway...
You have me on a roll!
Beautiful dress though, you have a lucky girl:)

  2. I make these and sell them at my mom's hair salon....so easy! Something I've found I like is hand sewing the neck of the dress to the ribbon so it stays in place and keeps "wrinkled" in the middle. AND I cut mine out to be in an A-line instead of straight down. The more you make these, the quicker you will get :) Great dress!

  3. I love making those dresses. They are soo soo cute. The Lazy Days skirt is great too. You're lucky to have 2 little girls to sew for. I only have one and she's set on dresses for the next two years. Lol!

  4. I am SO making 100 of these for myself. Maybe not out of pillowcases though, ahem, as my derriere is a bit larger LOL. I can pair these with cardigans for work! Love it!!!

  5. I've been waiting for my 3 mo old to be "big enough" for a pillow case dress... I never thought to make one like this! I am so stealing your idea :)

The dress is beautiful, by the way :)

  6. Hey! I just got back from our lake trip and was very pleased to see Chasing Cheerios posts on my Google Reader. I'm glad you didn't let one bad apple ruin it for you. Cute girly projects like this make me wish Seth could wear a dress! Hope you have a great trip.

  7. Thanks for the link! I picked up a pillow case at a yard sale recently, intending to make a pillowcase dress, and I hadn't gotten around to looking up directions!

  8. I made these a few months ago for my two girlies (same ages as your girls). We were doing tie-dye up at the lake and I couldn't find plain white tee shirts. But I did find white pillow cases, on sale too! So we tie-dyed them and then I made the dresses from there. They came out adorable. I even used the ribbon to trim along the bottom too.
