Learning about Axolotls

We recently studied axoltls in our TGTB Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fish unit, so Ella drew one in her journal. It’s so cute!!  (Drawing lesson via Art for Kids Hub)

Easter Basket Goodies...Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

I always like including games in my girls' Easter baskets and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is one of our favorites.  There is always a lot of screaming and laughing when we play this game.  I love it because its simple to understand and its fun for everyone from 5 years old to 70 years old!

Narnia Unit

Ella, Ada, and I had fun completing a Narnia unit from HearthSong (on Etsy).  We didn't follow the unit exactly... we left a lot out and added in a few things, but that's the way we do units.  Ada had fun coloring this unicorn shield from the unit, and we finally got it glued into her journal.

Field Trip Friday

One of my favorite things about homeschooling are the frequent field trips. Since the younger girls and I are working through The Good and Beautiful’s Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fish unit, we went to a park to look for these animals (O was at an event with her friends). We saw hundreds of turtles, but we spent most of our time dodging protective and aggressive swans!!

Nutella Sun Pastry

Both of our older girls are taking cooking/baking classes at our co-op this year, and we are all reaping the benefits. This week E made a Nutella Sun Pastry. She used 2 sheets of puff pastry, Nutella, and an egg. It was SO good! I’m hoping she’ll make one for the family for our Easter lunch!

Sunflowers for Ukraine

Ada and I made a sunflower crown this morning using the materials from the Sunflowers for Ukraine fundraiser by Fiddlesticks Kids (and more). Such a simple way to show our support for Ukraine ❤️🌻

Rainbow Snack

Ella and I made rainbow snacks for our Poetry Tea Time class at our co-op tomorrow. I think our kiddos are going to be excited ❤️🌈

Our Trip to Kiev, Ukraine

In 1998, Elliott and I visited my dad who lived in Kiev, Ukraine at the time. It was an amazing experience for us. The people are so kind, and the city is beautiful. We are having a hard time tearing ourselves away from watching nonstop news coverage of the war, and our hearts are breaking for the Ukrainians. It’s so incomprehensible and senseless, and we wish there was more we could do.

The Parthenon in Nashville

Since all of the girls have studied Ancient Greece this year, and we are reading Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief for our book club this month, we decided that a stop at The Parthenon in Nashville was a must!

Alma Thomas Art Exhibit

We studied the art of Alma Woodsey Thomas a few weeks ago, and today we saw her art at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. We love visiting art museums, and Ada said this one is her favorite ❤️

Learning about Surface Tension

We recently learned about surface tension by balancing pins on the surface of water. Simple yet effective and interesting.

Treasures from Jennifer

We’ve collected several beautiful wooden pieces from Treasures from Jennifer’s Etsy shop over the last few years. Everything is so well made and beautiful. Ada enjoyed counting and making patterns with the felted wool balls this morning ❤️

Washing Dishes

Unlike her mama, this kiddo LOVES to wash dishes. I’m pretty reliant on the dishwasher and rarely wash any dishes, but we have a set of plastic plates that I’ll get out for her to wash when she requests this activity. She had fun and this kept her busy for a while.

It’s Dance Competition Season!

Our oldest girls are competitive dancers, and we are in the middle of dance competition season. I am so thankful that O does both her and Ella’s make-up and her own hair. I’m only responsible for Ella’s hair. This is a very good thing because O is much better than me at all things, especially make-up 😬🤣❤️

Anne of Green Gables Book Club

I hold a middle and high school book club once a month at our co-op, and this month we read Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables is a long time favorite in our house with O starting to listen to the audiobook when she was Ada’s age. Somehow, this was my first time listening to the whole book, and we all loved it. Since Ada also listened to and LOVED the book, I let her join the book club. And, of course, she had to dress up as Anne.

At our book club, we had fancy teacups and saucers, and we served lemonade and (fake) raspberry cordial. Ella made a butter cake with cream cheese icing and strawberries, and Ada made sugar cookies. As we ate, we discussed the book, rolled literature question dice, and played charades. It was a fun and simple book club meeting.

Last month we read The Outsiders and next month, we are reading Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. We like variety!

Stair Slide!!!

We’ve been wishing someone would invent and sell a stair slide for about 15 years, and it finally happened! The girls’ grandparents gave them a set for Christmas, and it is fun and FAST! It’s actually shortened in this pic, so it’s not quite so fast. I wish we’d had this when the big girls were little, but they aren’t too big to slide! Fun times ❤️

History Quest Early Times

We are using History Quest Early Times for history this year, and it is working really well to combine my 5 year old and 12 year old for the lessons. We all enjoy the chapters, and Ada (5 years old) especially likes the History Hops. In these pictures, they are coloring Minoan Pottery with washable markers before painting over it with water to make the ink bleed. After the vases dried, they cut them out and glued them in their journals.

Leaf Collector

When Ada saw this beautiful leaf in the lake, she knew we couldn’t leave it behind no matter how cold the water was. She was in and out of the lake fast. This kiddo is a nature lover who loves to collect all the things ❤️

A Walk in the Woods

Walking in the woods with Ada is always an adventure. She led the way while singing and telling us to trust our instincts.

Melissa and Doug Letter Puzzle

Melissa and Doug word puzzles are a fun part of Ada’s Gameschooling kindergarten curriculum.

Plaster of Paris Beach Art

I was looking through old posts and saw that this one has more than 82,000 hits. I don’t have a clue why it was so popular, but I think I’ll put this on my to for list to do again!  ðŸ¤£

Creative Fruit Tray

Ada (5 years old) was in charge of making our fruit tray for supper. She was so proud and happy with her creation, but she didn’t want anyone to eat her smiley face 😊❤️

Alma Woodsey Thomas Art Project

We’ve been learning about the life and art of Alma Woodsey Thomas. After learning about her and looking at her art, the girls created pieces inspired by her using kwik stix and art paper. My 12 year old especially enjoyed this project, and we plan to do it again soon.

Mardi Gras King Cake

We’re continuing our tradition of making a king cake, and it’s so good! We use a box mix and there are a lot of steps, but it’s worth it. Ada and I did the first part, and the older girls did the rest. Then we all decorated it together. Ada got the baby in her piece, but I’m pretty sure it was rigged 🤣❤️
