Artist Study...Van Gogh

O and I have started studying an artist a month (this is another great idea from My Montessori Journey).  The first artist that we have studied is Van Gogh.  We looked at Van Gogh's art on the ipad (I downloaded Van Gogh hd, which is a great, inexpensive app), read several books about Van Gogh, and then did a few activities based on one of his paintings.

This great magnetic activity using the painting, Bedroom in Arles, came from the blog, little acorns.  I printed the activity on magnetic paper, and O arranged the pieces to match the painting.

After O completed the magnetic activity, we had fun coloring a picture of Bedroom in Arles.  It's so much fun to color together!

This week we'll focus on The Starry Night.

  1. This is amazing. I've been trying to think of a way to introduce artists to my 3-year-old. I haven't gotten very far in my planning. Thank you so much for sharing this (and all of your other) wonderful ideas!

  2. Like Lea said before me....I've been trying to think of a way to introduce art to my girls.

Thanks for the ideas!! I think I'll be doing some web-surfing tonight!

  3. Great reading with follow up activities. I love it!

  4. I am so glad you are enjoying the van Gogh bedroom activity! Maybe you'll like my "Vincent van Gogh, Meteorologist" activity too, especially if Starry Night is the next work you'll be studying. I love van Gogh and it is so nice to know that people are introducing young children to his work. Thanks again!

  5. Hi, Melissa! Thanks for linking to me again. We just started a new artist study in my classroom that I'll be posting about soon. Take care! Laura

  6. Thank you so much for sharing! I was hoping to focus more on art this summer and this gives me some great ideas!
