Loving the Rice Pit

O was THRILLED to play in her rice pit today! She hasn't played in it in a while since we've had rainy weather lately. She took all of the tools from her lentil tray to the rice pit and played independently for a long time. If you have a screened porch, I highly recommend having a rice pit for hours and hours of fun! Just make sure to keep it covered when it rains because you do NOT want your rice to get wet...it turns into a mess of mildew and yuckiness!

  1. Is there a particular reason for rice, and not sand? I just never heard of a rice pit before and therefore wondering. Now I think about it, it is different texture.

  2. We've been using a Rubbermaid underbed box for our sand and my little guy always tries to sit inside :) But you're right, it is great fun for them.

Is that a sandbox that you're using? Can I ask what brand?

  3. oops, meant to say we use rice in our box. Not sand. That way, we can use it inside and makes for easy clean up.

  4. I have a giant bag of rice that has been waiting for our rice box (we also have a bean box that Landry LOVES!) but am wondering how you initially cleaned the rice (or did you?) before putting it in...

    Thanks!

  5. The primary reason we use rice instead of sand is that it is easier to clean up, and it doesn't stick to clothes, etc. like sand does.
I don't know what brand the sandbox is. We bought it from Big Lots, and it breaks down into small pieces.
I didn't clean the rice before putting it in the box. There didn't seem to be any need... It is very important not to get it wet though!

  6. We're planning to do a rice pit for Bear as soon as we move into the house we are building. I agree that it is much easier for cleanup, although there is something so nice about running sand through one's hands. She has a big bowl of rice she plays in right now. You can see it here:http://theadventuresofbear.blogspot.com/2009/03/tot-school.html just scroll down a bit for the picture.

  7. That is a lovely idea! I like the bean idea too. I think that we might try something like that.

  8. Adventures of Bear- We love playing in the sand, too. We have a sandbox in the yard and a beach. We have such a wonderful time playing with the sand when it's a little wet and making yummy treats using donut and cake molds :) I can't wait until we can get into the sand again. It will be very soon, maybe even next week!

  10. Another option is to use birdseed. Anything that gets out of the pit can be swept outside for the birds to eat.
