Kids in the Kitchen...Apples and Onions

O, E, and I are reading Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and we are really enjoying it! (I enjoy reading the Little House on the Prairie books just as much if not more than O) Almanzo's favorite dish is Apples and Onions. Since O and I had never heard of such a combination, we decided to give it a try!

First, O peeled the onion. I chopped the onion and sauteed it in butter until it was translucent.

O washed the apples with Veggie Wash.

Then we cut the apples together.

I sauteed the apples and onions until the apples were soft and added salt to taste. I was surprised by how good this was! O was pretending to be Eliza Jane (Almanzo's oldest sister) and declared that apples and onions were Eliza Jane's favorite dish, too!

And here's a look at O's supper tray...apples and onions, sweet potato chunks, avocado, salmon, and rotisserie chicken. I love serving O's meals in trays like this one.

  1. I never thought about putting apples and onions together! Going to have to try that one! And how cute O was pretending to be Eliza Jane! Reading Little House lately? LOL!

  2. Thanks for your comment, Jennifer! When I read it, I realized that somehow the first paragraph of the post had been cut out :) Yep, reading LOTS of Little House lately!

  3. Yum! We tried that about 2 years ago for the same reason! I'd been reading that book to my 2nd grade class, and I thought, "Hey, ti could be good..."

There's a recipe on for pork chops with apples and onions, and it's terrific!

  4. Onions and mangoes are also good sauteed in butter as is or with apples too. Red onions make it really good. Love the picture of the girls at the beach.

  5. I love that series! I still have the books I read when I was a kid. I thought maybe Madeline was to youg for them (she is four) but after reading your post I may try taking them out.

  6. Where did you get the elephant chopsticks?? So cute!

  7. Yum! My Dad used to make this and I had totally forgotten about it... Apples and onions at the ready!

I loved the Little House books as a child, I may have to read them again soon, some good books to curl up with during the Winter!

  8. We have also been reading the Little House books. I had them when I was younger and still love them. Amelia likes to pretend she is Laura and I am Ma. :)

Dawn, I dont know where Melissa found her chopsticks, but we found ours at The School Box.

  9. We have the same training chopsticks, but ours have a pig on the top. Emily loves using them :0)
