An Easy Silhouette

IMG_2027 (Large), originally uploaded by omamom16.

Since I've been posting about our handmade gifts lately, I thought I'd include this silhouette of O that I made last year. It was very easy, and her grandparents loved them. To make this silhouette I took a profile picture of O, printed it as an 8 x 10, cut out around her profile, and painted it black. Cutting the hair was a little difficult, and I'm still not happy with how it turned out. I think it will be a little easier to do now that her hair is longer :) I think this idea came from here. Enjoy!

  2. I too made silhouettes as soon as I saw Nies post... I did our whole family (which I still havent framed :( and it was really easy. They make great gifts, esp if you take a photo of your nephews nieces and give it to their parents.

    I blogged about it here

  3. So much easier than trying to get them to sit still in front of a lamp the way I just did a few weeks ago! Glad I read about this easier way!

  6. I really want to make these too. I am hoping I get the nerve to do it for the holidays for some grandparent gifts. I would also love one for my home! I am thinking I could make them for my little daycare tots too for the parents!

  7. Ok, I have questions. (I too saw these on Nie Nie and would have loved to ask questions, but...) So what kind of paper did you use and what type of paint? I want to make these as Christmas gifts for the grandparents!

  8. Hi there. I second mGk's ?'s. Also, the site you linked to said she cut the pic out and then used the outside part as a template (unless I'm reading this wrong which is entirely possible!). Did you use the actual pic of O and then paint it over w/ black? Thanks, can't wait to try.

  9. Sorry it's taken me so long to answer the questions :( I used regular printer paper, but if I make them again, I'll print the pics on cardstock (the paper curled a bit when I painted it). I used black acrylic craft paint. I did paint over the actual picture. However, I had to turn it over and paint on the back of it because I couldn't bear to paint over her beautiful face :)

  10. So, here goes my first comment on your awesome blog that I've been reading for months! :) I get so many good ideas for you, Melissa!

Anyways, this idea is so cool! I was wondering what you thought about trying to make the silhouettes more like cameos -- you know, maybe brown paint and a tannish/cream backround in a oval frame? Would that look good?
